The European Super League is a new breakaway competition that has hit the famous European Football Association.
For most people, the 2021 breakaway may be the first time they have ever heard of the situation. But, in this article, we bring you records of past situations which preceded the 2021 breakaway. So, stick and stay.
The Background Of The European Super League
The European Football Association is the mother union of all Individual football associations in Europe. It is made up of the likes of the English Football Association and the Royal Spanish Football Association.
Over the years, UEFA has sought to organize the most beautiful competitions for its member nations. This includes the recently added UEFA Nations League.
However, there have been times when some member countries and member football clubs felt cheated by the association. This is particularly true in recent times when there have been corruption allegations against the Football Governing body.
Since then, there have been rumours of the formation of a new league that is set to either rival the UEFA Champions League or to replace it altogether.
On Sunday, April 18, 2021, 12 Elite European Football Clubs declared the launch of the European Super League. The twelve teams include the big Six teams from England namely; Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal.
Then, there are 3 teams each from the Spanish La Liga and Italian Serie A respectively. They are Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletico Madrid (All from Spain) and Juventus, Inter Millan and AC Milan (All from Italy).
The European Super League Competition Breakdown
The format of the European Super League will be two groups of 10 teams, competiting in home and away leg games.
The 15 founding teams will be automatic members of the league every season. Then, 5 other teams will join them, based on their performance from the previous season.
What it means is that, out of the 20 teams, 10 of them will be placed in a group. And another 10 placed in another group. There shall be home and away fixtures in each group.
Then towards the end of the competition, the top four teams from each group will be plotted against each other in the knockout stage. Eventually, there shall be Semi-finals, also obeying the home and away legs and finally, a one-leg final climaxes it all.
With this league, all top European clubs (founding members) are guaranteed a regular payment from the league through their sponsors.
It is widely speculated and confirmed, through a press Release that, American banking firm, JP Morgans is the financier of the league.
The Breakaway History
While many people may think that the idea of the European Super League was formed in 2021, it’s far from true. In fact, the idea has been around for nearly two decades now.
According to facts established on popular sites and history depots, the idea was first established in 1998. But, in a successful attempt to quash the plans, UEFA expanded the Champions League to include more teams.
The Initial purpose of the breakaway was to give football clubs more money and give more teams the chance to participate in the contest.
However, currently, the idea behind the 2021 breakaway is simply ‘more money. Most of the top clubs in Europe feel they deserve more than UEFA offers them.
So, they’re breaking away to establish their own league where they earn as much as they want. Well, while this may be a good plan for the teams especially in times of a Global Pandemic, the founding teams have a huge hurdle to jump in the coming days.
FIFA, EUFA and Other Football Federations are against the move and are looking to clamp down on it. We look forward to more eventful days as the drama unfolds.
